The man fatally wounded Friday night in the parking lot of 449 Bell Road is identified as Algernon Cross, 40, of Herman Street.

Police were called to the scene at 7:51 p.m.  Upon arrival, they found Cross on the ground next to his vehicle deceased.  Cross was traveling with a female relative.  She said that he told her to pull into the parking lot after he saw someone he recognized.

Cross had multiple felony cocaine convictions, registered with the MNPD as an ex-con last June and was on parole at the time of his murder.  Hermitage Precinct detectives are investigating his recent background information in an effort to identify the shooter.

Detectives are also continuing in their efforts to determine what Jerome Sawyers, 36, knows about this homicide.  Sawyers, of Lea Avenue, was charged early today with evidence tampering in this case and has posted a $30,000 bond.  Sawyers was present in the parking lot when officers arrived, but has refused to provide information as to what took place.  Detectives know that Sawyers rifled through Cross’ pockets after he was shot and then walked to a creek which runs behind the parking lot where he lobbed something into the creek.  He walked away from the scene briefly to a nearby gas station and returned as the first officers arrived.  Marijuana residue was found along the path Sawyers took to the creek.

Anyone with information about Cross’ murder is urged to contact Crime Stoppers at 615-742-7463.
