Positive changes evident as 4th grade families preview Antioch Middle (Photo Gallery)

Fourth-grade students and their families enjoyed a soccer match, school tour, and ice cream sundaes at the 5th-IMG_5166grade preview night at Antioch Middle Prep. Families from Cane Ridge Elementary, Cole Elementary, and other local schools previewed the campus and were all smiles leaving the recently-renovated school. New Executive Principal Celia Conley was excited to see so many families at the event, saying, “We are so excited about the turnout, and are grateful to our new families for choosing Antioch as their middle school.”

One parent, whose Cane Ridge High School student attended Antioch Middle Prep before the renovations, had positive remarks about the new look. She has a 4th grade student preparing to attend Antioch Middle Prep next fall. The incoming student gave a thumbs-up when Dan Moranville asked for feedback.

Moranville is the Community Involvement Specialist at AMP and works directly with families and community partners. “My hope is that parents will share what they’ve experienced with their friends and neighbors, so that we can tell the community that Antioch Middle Prep really is the best choice for the whole family, not just the student,” he said.

Antioch Middle Prep is working to become a community school, where families can access the resources they need, and community partners support the social, emotional, and academic success of students and families. Translators were available at the preview night to assist parents in communicating with teachers and administration. Antioch Middle Prep has translators on staff, serving students and parents throughout the school day.

“Strengthening the methods of communication with families is our top priority because we know that effective communication is integral for our families. We’ve started a Facebook page, and Twitter and Instagram accounts, and families are always welcome to call or email if they have questions or need some form of assistance,” Moranville stated. AMP’s Facebook page can be found at facebook.com/AntiochMPBears, and the Twitter and Instagram are both @AntiochMPBears.

Another parent told Cam Wingfield that his child moved back to their zoned school in the Cane Ridge cluster from a school choice option, saying, “You all are doing a great job at Antioch Middle, and I can see that.  People notice.” Wingfield is the Family Involvement Specialist for the Cane Ridge cluster. He and several faculty members from Cole Elementary were present for the event.

Dr. Darwin Mason, Principal, and 4th grade Team Lead Jodi Hatfield were among those who represented Cole Elementary. Mason stated in an email to Antioch Middle faculty, “We [Cole administration] encouraged parents to attend and we’re happy that we did! Several parents reported that they were there because they had heard negative statements and wanted to see for themselves. I talked with them during and after the event and there were only positive statements!”

Antioch Middle Prep Assistant Principal Dr. Bryan Seay added, “Rising 5th grade students and their families were excited to meet some of the faces they’ll see next year and to tour our building. This will help these students make a smooth transition to Antioch Middle Prep and also helps our staff get to know some of our future students!”

Moranville said of the connection between schools, “We’re trying to build a continuum of education, so families can be confident they and their child are being prepared for the transition from elementary into middle school, and from middle into high school, and that our teachers and administrators are communicating needs and serving students well throughout that process.” Wingfield added, “Our rising 5th graders could truly see all these individuals who, together, are supporting their education.”
