Man killed in Friday night I-24 wreck

The man killed in Friday’s 8:30 p.m. two-car collision on I-24 east near the Rutherford County line is identified as Ronald Acosta, 52, of Smyrna.

The investigation shows that Acosta was driving a 2005 Chevrolet Impala to the right of a 2010 Ford Focus when, for a reason unknown, the Impala left its lane and struck the rear of the Focus.  The impact caused both vehicles to leave the roadway, where they struck a grass embankment and a tree line.  Acosta, who was not wearing a seatbelt, was ejected and died at the scene.  Two open containers of beer and several ounces of marijuana were found inside the Impala.  Toxicology testing will be conducted to determine whether Acosta was impaired.

The driver of the Focus, Rebecca Riggsby, 27, and her passenger, Robert Riggsby, 25, both of Murfreesboro, were transported to Vanderbilt University Medical Center for treatment of non-life threatening injuries.  Both were wearing seatbelts.
