Director of Schools Dr. Shawn Joseph, members of the Board of Education and Dr. Joseph’s executive leadership team spent the weekend together at a two-day retreat designed to start the journey of establishing trusting relationships and communications protocols.
Through cooperative study, workshops and activities, the group agreed to move forward as “Team MNPS,” a unified and collaborative body that speaks with one voice.
The retreat included a study of Dr. Joseph’s “Book of the Month,”Leadership and Self-Deception, which was recommended reading for each Board member and senior leadership staff. Through the lens of that book and the lessons within it, the group had initial discussions that will lead to concrete protocols, to be finalized at a future Board meeting. The protocols will guide each individual’s role on Team MNPS, how they can support the goals of the district and how they interact with one another:
· Board member to Board member,
· Board member to administration,
· Board member to public and
· administration to public.
“After today’s meeting with the Board, I feel stronger than ever that this was one of the best professional decisions I could have made,” said Dr. Joseph. “Working together with Board members who bring such commitment, passion and talents, we can tackle the issues in this district.”
“Studying Leadership and Self-Deception, we realized that the change we hope to see in this district must begin with us,” said Board Chair Dr. Sharon Gentry. “Effective leaders starve problems and feed opportunities. There will be many opportunities to explore and take advantage of as we take the community through a strategic planning process. I cannot wait to get started.”
