Saturday morning, we had an awesome Town Hall Meeting at Casa Azafrán to introduce Dr. Shawn Joseph, the new director of Metro Nashville Public Schools, to my constituents in School Board District 7 (South + Southeast Nashville).
More than 100 folks came through during an hour-and-a-half session asking great questions and bringing spot-on comments about topics including parent engagement, special-needs teaching and learning, and career and technical education.
For his part, Dr. Joseph outlined key priorities for raising student achievement and improving teacher recruitment and retention. For my part, I recommitted to my longstanding personal priorities, including expanding early childhood education, pushing innovative strategies for English learners, and stepping up our efforts around communications and community engagement.
Thanks to my board colleagues Anna Shepherd and Tyese Hunter for joining the conversation.
Thanks to Dr. Joseph for taking the time on Saturday morning — his ninth day on the job! — to engage in a very meaningful way.
And thanks, especially, to the students, parents, teachers and taxpayers who joined us for an inspiring discussion. As always, I am proud to represent South + Southeast Nashville on the school board.
