Man Who Attacked Mother Before Barricading Himself in Their Home Charged

A man who attacked his mother before barricading himself for several hours in their Antioch-area home ultimately surrendered to SWAT officers early today without incident.

Steven Whitson, 51, who lives with his 81-year-old mother on Johnson Ridge Road, reportedly became angry with her after she accused him of taking her prescription medication.  He physically attacked her, kicking her and punching her in the face, causing serious injury to her left eye and head.  She also had bruising on her neck which she told domestic violence detectives was caused by her son the day before, when he strangled her after she had confronted him about the medication.

As Aileen Whitson was assisted by her brother, Audie Johnson, 86, out of the house, a neighbor, Colleen McDonald, 53, also came to help her.  McDonald reported that Steven Whitson fired shots toward her from inside 2512 Johnson Ridge Road.

Steven Whitson surrendered himself just after midnight and was taken into custody without further incident.  Whitson is charged with attempted criminal homicide and aggravated assault (strangulation) against his mother and aggravated assault against McDonald.  He is being held in lieu of $150,000 bond.

Whitson was charged with aggravated assault in 2009 when he allegedly pointed an assault rifle at his mother and threatened to kill her.  That case was retired.
