Police searching for car thieves that struck, killed scooter rider

Officers are continuing in their efforts to identify the two car thieves responsible for killing the rider of a Honda Motor Scooter late Tuesday night at the intersection of Mt. View Road and Baby Ruth Lane in South Nashville.

The deceased is identified as Vernon D. Knight, 48, of Baby Ruth Lane.

Knight was riding his scooter east on Mt. View Road at 9:10 p.m. and appeared to have just entered the left turn lane to proceed onto Baby Ruth Lane when a 2017 gray Dodge Challenger came into the turn lane and collided with the Scooter. Witnesses reported that just prior to the crash, the Challenger was passing vehicles across the double yellow line and into oncoming traffic.

Knight died at the scene. The Challenger left the roadway and came to rest in a ditch. The two occupants of the Challenger, described as young black men in their late teens, fled on foot. One was wearing a white shirt with dark shorts. The other was wearing a black shirt with dark shorts. One of the two may have a leg injury.

The Dodge Challenger is a rental vehicle and was stolen from Nashville International Airport. The car is being processed for evidence.
