AGT Gives Austin Brown a Second Chance in Season 20 — Did His Original Song Win You Over?

If you’ve been keeping up with America’s Got Talent Season 20, you may remember a contestant from Episode 2 (June 3) by the name of Austin Brown.
The Nashville-based singer initially auditioned with a heartfelt performance of “When a Man Loves a Woman,” which split the judges right down the middle; Sofia Vergara and Mel B both gave instant yeses, while Howie Manel (despite calling it “really, really good”) and Simon Cowell remained unconvinced. Simon said he’d like to see Austin perform something “less generic,” but he’d have to speak with a producer about potentially setting up a second audition on another day.

Austin returned to the AGT stage for another shot at stardom on Tuesday’s episode, determined to show the judges who he really is, declaring, “I’m not going home without a yes from Simon.” (He also admitted to being afraid of Simon for most of his life, which we found incredibly relatable.)
This time around, Austin served up an original song called “Somebody Believed,” whose lyrics perfectly captured the second-chance moment he was currently experiencing. (A little too perfectly, perhaps? We’ll leave that one for the AGT conspiracy theorists to ponder.) Comparing him to a country version of Christopher Cross, the judges doused Austin with praises — and more importantly, four yeses.
The Birmingham Youth Choir earned this week’s Golden Buzzer, lending their tight harmonies to a performance inspired by the iconic “Joyful, Joyful” moment from Sister Act 2. They veered off in their own direction midway through, but I was half expecting Whoopi Goldberg to pop out in a full nun costume. (Come on, she did it for Broad City!)
OK, let’s talk about Tuesday’s episode: Are you glad Austin got a second chance? Would the Birmingham Youth Choir have gotten your Golden Buzzer? And which other auditions left an impression on you? Drop a comment with your thoughts below.
