And Just Like That : Kristin Davis on Charlotte's Gut-Wrenching Scene With Carrie

And Just Like That… took us back to the Sex and the City days at the end of episode six, when Charlotte has a run-in with Carrie at Duane Reade. (Warning you now: Spoilers ahead.)
Carrie catches Charlotte buying male Depends, and naturally has questions. Eventually, Charlotte breaks down in Carrie's arms as she reveals that her husband, Harry, has prostate cancer. Even though his prognosis is good, she's been completely overwhelmed keeping it all a secret and scared that he's going to die. Carrie promises that she'll be there for her friend and won't tell a soul.

They still get together for the occasional brunch and check in when they can, but they've mainly been off in their own worlds. That's understandable given that Carrie, Charlotte and Miranda are no longer single women in their 30s, without kids, but it also makes you miss the days when the trio (plus Samantha) saw each other more regularly.
“That's why I do the show—it's about those friendships,” executive producer and writer Julie Rottenberg tells Glamour of the episode, which she also directed. “It's about that moment in the Duane Reade. Some of the most painful moments in your life are shared with your best friends, wherever that might be. It was the heart of the first series, and at the heart of this series is these friendship.”
While Rottenberg says the scene was “everything I hoped for,” it wasn't actually shot at the same time as the rest of the episode. Below, Kristin Davis reveals what happened behind-the-scenes that made her concerned and why the moment was actually such a gift for Charlotte.

Charlotte and Harry.Craig Blankenhorn/MaxGlamour: Your breakdown at the end of episode six was so poignant. Tell me about filming that scene with Sarah Jessica Parker.
Kristin Davis: Thank you. I'm so relieved to hear it because I was really concerned, and I'll tell you why. That scene was originally scheduled for somewhere around the week of July 4, 2024, but I got COVID. We were supposed to film that scene the first up of the day, which meant you have to go to work at four in the morning to be ready for when the light comes up. At maybe three in the morning, I woke up with a big fever. I was panicked, like, “Oh, my God, Sarah Jessica is going to be there getting ready, and I can't go!” I had to hug her and everything in the scene. And I was like, “I can't hug Sarah Jessica when I have COVID. I was like, we're in the middle of the season. This would be terrible.”
Definitely. It's still so contagious. You did the right thing.
So, I'm frantically texting everybody in the middle of the night, like, "I have COVID. What do I do?" I was so panicked. Because I couldn't film that day, we had to punt, as we call it. We had to punt that scene down the schedule, and it ended up literally being the last week of filming.
Wow.
I thought to myself, “Am I still in the place that I need to be to do the scene effectively?” I'd had to already film all the other episodes. I was super worried that I was not in the right place, so I'm happy that you liked it.
Oh, it is like a gut punch. I think we can all relate to Charlotte there, because we've all been in a moment where you're trying to hold it all together but then the floodgates open.
I can certainly relate to that. I thought it was so great, really, because Charlotte has been carrying this weight. She's trying to take care of Harry and do what he wants her to do and what he needs her to do, but at the same time, it's not what's good for her. It's killing her to keep that secret. So the fact that she runs into Carrie, and that Carrie sees through her, is such a gift to Charlotte. I just love the season so much, so I'm happy that we're getting to show it to people.
