K-pop legend Psy is filled with high hopes for his new label's girl group, Baby DONT Cry (BDC), which officially debuted on Monday with their lead single "F Girl." The four-member group, consisting of Yihyun (19), Mia, Kumi, and Beni (16), has been training for five years and is poised to make a global impact. The "F Girl" single, described as a baby rock track, is buzzy, fun, and unapologetically youthful in nature. The group's unique sound comes from their producer and creative director, Soyeon, the leader of K-pop girl group Idle. "She's someone that's already achieved what we want to achieve in the future, so she was able to give us very realistic and relatable advice," Yihyun says. BDC's members range in age from 19 to 16, with Beni being the youngest at 16. She was a trainee for about six years, around the time P Nation was established in 2018. Psy says he was looking for the right members and the right time for a girl group, and he believes the timing is perfect because "the girls are ready now." The girls have faced hardships during their trainee era but also have many fun and memorable moments. Beni says she was able to learn several genres of music and other languages during her training. The latter is typical for K-pop groups but makes sense in BDC's case as the group is poised to make a global impact, with two of the four members (Mia and Kumi) hailing from Japan. Psy explains that luck is "the moment when effort meets opportunity." He says their five years of training were the effort, and Soyeon stepping up as producer was the opportunity. "Because of that, we've been lucky, we are lucky, and our luck will keep going," he says. The girls also count some K-pop heavyweights as their role models. Kumi says she likes the energy that Blackpink's Lisa and Twice's Chaeyoung convey on stage, while Yihyun adds that she has been a fan of IU since elementary school and would love to meet her on stage. While debuting is only step one for BDC, the members are already looking ahead. Mia says she wants the group to be perceived as a very lovely yet confident group. "I believe all of our members have confident but also lovely personalities," she says. Baby DONT Cry's debut is just the beginning of their journey, but their confidence and youthful energy are already making a statement in the K-pop world.
