Bloodborne Live-Action Movie Still in Development Says Insider, and Fans Want One Director on Board

CalvinGames2025-06-288570

The forgotten live-action Bloodborne movie adaptation is reportedly still in development, thanks to a new report from a movie insider, and fans of the popular soulslike game already have a director in mind to pilot the project. Bloodborne is an action RPG game that was first launched in 2015 by developer FromSoftware and publisher Sony as a PlayStation 4 exclusive. Following the protagonist, the Hunter, through the gothic, Victorian-styled city of Yharnam, players must face horrifying enemies infected with a blood-borne disease.

It’s no secret in the video games community that soulslike fans have been pining for a Bloodborne sequel, in tandem with keeping their fingers crossed for a future PC port of the original game or a remaster that runs at 60fps. It’s reached the point where a sequel could never become a true “Bloodborne 2” mainly because of its multiple endings that don’t deliver a clear conclusion, and whispers around the fandom also expect a new protagonist to be front and center in a potential successor.

Bloodborne Movie Reportedly Still in Development With Fans Asking for Guillermo Del Toro to Direct

Reported by insider DanielRPK, via the Twitter account ScreenTime, the Bloodborne movie was said to still be in development, as the production is currently trying to find a director to helm the project. The adaptation was said to be in the works back in 2023, and one director is on every fan’s lips to make the IP his own. Guillermo del Toro is the fan-favorite director to take the reins, as the creative has a very distinct gothic style in all his fantasy works. Every horror and fantasy fan has their opinion on what the best Guillermo del Toro films are, and some of the auteur’s acclaimed work includes Hellboy 2: The Golden Army, The Shape of Water, and the award-winning Pan’s Labyrinth. A few other directors on Bloodborne fans’ wishlist include Nosferatu's Robert Eggers, The Haunting of Hill House's Mike Flanagan, and a surprising choice in Christopher Nolan.

Bloodborne isn’t the only soulslike IP that’s being turned into a movie, as FromSoftware’s other behemoth, Elden Ring, will also be shown the silver-screen treatment. The adaptation is confirmed to be helmed by 28 Years Later writer and this year’s Warfare director Alex Garland, who has been playing through the action RPG several times in preparation and seems to have boss battling down to a tee. Elden Ring writer and Game of Thrones author George R.R. Martin recently gave his blessing to the movie adaptation and Garland’s involvement, and fans of the writer know how candid he can be.

While Bloodborne fans keep their fingers crossed for Del Toro to be in the running, the director is preparing for the release of his own Netflix project. Frankenstein’s debut trailer was a real spectacle for fans of the classic Mary Shelley-created character, and Del Toro’s upcoming creature feature promises to be a visually stunning blend of gothic aesthetic and science fiction. Starring Moon Knight’s Oscar Isaac as protagonist Victor Frankenstein and Saltburn’s Jacob Elordi as the monster, horror fans have November inked on their calendars.
