While the Academy Award-winning film was ultimately directed by James Mangold, a planned earlier iteration of Ford v Ferrari would have seen F1 director Joseph Kosinski behind the wheel and was set to star Cruise and Pitt, but the project fell through due to budgetary reasons.
Now, Pitt is detailing another reason things didn't necessarily work out. “Tom and I, for a while there, were on Ford v Ferrari with Joe [to direct]. This was about 10 years before the guys who actually made it — and made it a great movie,” Pitt said.

Brad Pitt and Tom Cruise at 'F1' premiere in June 2025“What it came down to is that we both wanted to drive, and [Tom] wanted to play Shelby, and I wanted to play Ken Miles. And when Tom realized that Carroll Shelby would not be driving much in the movie, it didn’t come through," he added. "So I’m not sure how that’s going to work [in a potential ‘F1’ sequel], but we’ll give it a go. I’d love to.”

The film, made in collaboration with F1 athletes like producerLewis Hamilton, also features starsDamson Idris,Tobias Menzies, Kim Bodnia andJavier Bardem.
The actor told The National that he'd be up for a sequel, too, adding that the "focus" of a follow-up would have to be on Idris’ character.
“I would want to drive again, selfishly speaking,” Pitt said. “F1 is still the focus. It needs to be on Joshua Pierce – Damson Idris’s character – and the rest of the team fighting for a championship. Where does Sonny fit in? I’m not sure."
He continued: "Sonny’s probably out on the Bonneville Salt Flats, setting speed records or something like that. So I’m not sure beyond that, just yet. Right now, I’m just pleased as punch that something like this can bring people together. That’s the power of this kind of cinema.”

Believe me, I’ve raced against him. When we were doingInterview with the Vampire,we’d go and race go-karts. We’d literally finish and go drive go-karts all night.”
In a separate interview with E! News back in June, Pitt also shared his thoughts on a future team-up with Cruise, explaining that he'd be down under one condition.
“Well, I’m not gonna hang my ass off airplanes and s--- like that, so… when he does something again that’s on the ground," he joked.
