Damson Idris Hilarious Story of Spitting on Brad Pitt (and Ryan Reynolds) During F1 Scene
In a recent interview with The Late Show with Stephen Colbert, Damson Idris, 33, shared a hilarious anecdote about his experience working with his onscreen mentor, Ryan Reynolds. The two stars are set to appear together in the upcoming action-comedy film Free Guy, which is set to be released in theaters on August 13. During the interview, Idris joked about his nerves while filming a particularly intense scene with Reynolds. "It's so funny working with Ryan. He's such a great guy and an incredible actor. We did a scene where I had to punch him in the face, and I was so nervous," he explained. The actor continued, sharing that during the scene, "In between the takes, I accidentally spit in Ryan Reynolds's face," he admitted. "It was an accident. It was a really intense scene," he explained, saying that he "watched the spit go to Ryan," who had a shocked reaction. However, Reynolds handled the incident like a pro, Idris added. "And then he kept going, and in my head I'm like, 'Oh my gosh. I just spit on Ryan Reynolds's face. I'm going to lose my job now.' And I watched the spit the whole take, it was just there dribbling down," he said with a laugh. Before sharing the story, Idris poked fun at Reynolds' status in Hollywood. After host Stephen Colbert referred to the actor as "This really promising, up-and-coming new guy named Ryan Reynolds," Idris replied, saying, "He is good. He has a really bright future, that guy." He continued while chuckling, "I hope he sticks around." The younger star also recalled a time when he thought that he came very close to meeting Reynolds before his own Hollywood career took off. "I used to work at a movie theater in London. I was a usher there and wanted to spy on actors and try and learn," he said. "One day Ryan Reynolds comes in to watch a movie, and I'm at the back working. So I rush out, 'Oh my gosh, Ryan Reynolds is here.' And I don't catch him. I see a tall man in a suit just walk out the door." Idris' promise to himself wound up coming true when he eventually worked with Reynolds on Free Guy. However, it turns out that Idris might not have actually seen Reynolds in the theater after all. "I told Ryan the story. I said, 'Hey, when I was younger, I saw you. You came to see a movie at the theater.' He was like, 'I've never been to that theater,'" he joked. Elsewhere in the interview, Idris confirmed that he and Reynolds actually drove the cars for their roles in Free Guy. "We drove up to 120 miles per hour," he said, revealing that he "tried" to race against Reynolds. "Ryan is really fast. He is just such an amazing adrenaline junkie," he added. Regarding his training for the role, Idris said that it lasted about three months. "And it took us around two years to make this movie," he joked. "I had two years of driving experience under my belt. Technically, I'm probably faster than any of the actors in the movie."
