Dissecting the CI Noserider: a Traditional Longboard From Wayne Rich and Devon Howard

Depending on your hemisphere, summer is here. Depending on where you call home, summer can mean a dip in wave size. Those wonderfully long beach days with friends and family happen more and more, sun burns and salty skin and sunsets in the sand all part and parcel of the fun. Surfboards sit haphazardly on the beach, the wax inevitably melting into dirty little drips that catch sand and tear the skin off your chest. These are the days for a longboard.
Traditional longboarding, of course, leans heavily on the noseride. Performance longboards can make that a little tougher, since they have sharper rails in the tail. But not everyone is interested in performance longboarding, so the Channel Islands team got master shaper Wayne Rich and surfer Devon Howard to collaborate on a longboard specifically designed to make noseriding easier.
“With no edge in the tail, the CI Noserider ensures riders the best hold possible while on the nose,” the description reads. “Its finely-foiled, upturned tail rail is seamlessly integrated with Wayne’s coveted noseriding rocker, nose concave features and other bottom contours he’s meticulously refined over several decades with many of the world’s best longboard surfers.”

“While most ‘noserider’ designs have full, wide-templated nose outlines (19 inches +), the CI Noserider is intentionally pulled in just a tad—ensuring it doesn’t hinder highline trims or turns in bowly sections without sacrificing world class noseriding,” the CI team explained. “Its tail block width is also intentionally designed to be quite balanced: just wide enough to anchor your noserides but narrow enough that you can confidently drive through turns in the pocket.”
While there are plenty of options for summer that aren’t longboards, it’s tough to beat the traditional log when the waves aren’t absolutely firing and overhead. Or when they are, and you’re just a fan of the feel of a traditional log under your feet.
