Sharp-eyed viewers are calling out HBO Max’s “And Just Like That...” for what appears to be a major plot hole involving one of the show’s principal characters ― even though a source close to the show claims that isn’t the case.

Last week’s episode of the “Sex and the City” revival series ― titled “Silent Mode” ― found Lisa Todd Wexley(played by Nicole Ari Parker)learning that her father, Lawrence Todd, has died of a stroke. For much of the episode, Lisa grapples with her guilt at not spending more time with her father prior to his death while at odds with her dad’s longtime pal and colleague,Lucille Highwater (Jenifer Lewis), over plans for the funeral.

Some fans, however, quickly pointed out that Lisa had already addressed her father’s passing on a Season 1 episode while discussing the death of Mr.Big (Chris Noth).

“I was the exact same way when I lost my dad last year. I could see my rings literally shaking on my hands while I was trying to be strong,” Lisa tells Charlotte York Goldenblatt (Kristin Davis) in the scene, clips of which have been widely circulating on social media.

Perhaps even more confusingly,Lawrence Todd appeared on-screen in Season 2 of“And Just Like That...,”where he was memorably portrayed by “Star Wars” icon Billy Dee Williams.

Not surprisingly, the online backlash was swift.Although somehave suggestedthatthe creators intended for Lisa to have two dads, many felt it was more likely a writers’ room gaffe.

“This show lacks basic continuity. Do they get new writers for every episode? Don’t the actors pick up on it?” one person wrote on TikTok.

Another wrote on X:“Maybe it’s a Mamma Mia situation and she has three dads? You don’t know.”

A member of the "And Just Like That..." production team said Lisa was actually referring to the death of her stepfather rather than her biological dad on Season 1 of the show. Craig Blankenhorn/Max

By Monday evening, however,a member of the “And Just Like That...” production team clarified to The Hollywood Reporter and Entertainment Weekly, among other outlets, that the “dad”Lisa referred to in Season 1 was actually her stepfather, not her biological father.

Whether such a head-scratching explanation will be enough to quell the criticism of “Silent Mode” remains to be seen, and similarly, only time will tell if Lisa’s father or stepfather will be mentioned on“And Just Like That...” in the future. However, the show ― already divisive among longtime SATC devotees ―has been called out on previous occasions for continuity errors.

In Season 2, Charlotte’s husband Harry Goldenblatt (Evan Handler)alluded to his mother having “been dead for 10 years.” This statement contradicts Harry’s previous remarks about his mother on a 2003 episode of “Sex and the City,” during which he recalled promising his mother on her deathbed that he’d marry a Jewish woman, prompting Charlotte to convert to Judaism.
