Ford Gets More Rugged With The Explorer Tremor

Ford has added another model to its growing Tremor stable, the Explorer, expanding its off-road lineup. While we’re skeptical about yet another soft unibody crossover that’s been dressed up to make it seem rugged, this one at least offers something more than the others.

That something more is mostly power. Buyers can opt for the EcoBoost V6 engine with 400-horsepower on tap, giving plenty of grunt to get through the rugged backcountry. But even with the suspension lift, Bridgestone Dueler A/T tires, limited-slip Torsen differential, and other outdoorsie-geared goodies, this thing will probably be more at home on fire roads than a technical trail.

Sadly, we question how many will really even see dirt. Some shoppers will simply be attracted to the aesthetics with those flashy orange accents which have drawn people to the other Tremor models.

Sure, Ford blessed the Explorer Tremor with steel front and rear skid plates and enough LED lights to make it look like a Peterbilt, but the pathetic one-inch lift will mean on really challenging trails the durability of those skid plates will quickly be tested. We honestly would be scared to find out just how much abuse they can endure.

In other words, this is an Explorer LARPing as a Bronco for those who don’t want to or can’t afford the pricey rig made by the Blue Oval. When the base model for 2025 has an MSRP of $37,995 and you’d be hard-pressed to find a dealer with such a stripped-down example, a lot of people will opt for the Explorer instead.

Because let’s be honest: a lot of off-road capable rigs are purchased by people who drive them like how suburban dwellers treat North Face gear: as a fashion statement, not a thing of functionality.

Maybe the Ford Explorer Tremor is more capable than a Honda Passport or Subaru Outback Wilderness (maybe), but let’s make no mistake, it’s not a hardcore off-roader. But most people don’t truly need that anyway, so we guess this works for them.
