With the 77th Primetime Emmy nominations announced this week, HBO can now claim that it has the top two most-nominated comic book shows of all time. However, the network isn’t going to rest on its laurels as HBO boss Casey Bloys recently shared that it expects upcoming DC Universe series Lanterns to also be an Emmy contender.

While there have been plenty of comic book shows released since the start of the 21st century, very few have managed to attract any award attention. Only DC’s Watchmen and The Penguin, Marvel’s WandaVision, and Prime Video’s The Boys have earned any major nods, with the former three each receiving 20+ nominations in their respective year of eligibility.

Speaking with TheWrap about the whopping 142 Emmy nominations HBO and HBO Max received across 20 original programs this year, Bloys took a moment to look ahead at its upcoming slate, which includes a new superhero series, the drama Lanterns.

Lanterns wouldn’t be DC’s first Emmy hit

“If there’s wood, I’m going to knock on it, because I’m superstitious, so I’ll just say I feel good about it. I’m not sure with the Emmy window where it falls, but in whatever window it falls in, I do believe it’ll be an Emmy contender,” Bloys remarked.

Bloys isn’t wrong in thinking Lanterns could be an Emmy contender, given the level of talent attached to the DCU series. Kyle Chandler, who co-leads the series as Hal Jordan/Green Lantern, has been nominated four times for Outstanding Lead Actor in a Drama Series, winning once for Friday Night Lights. Damon Lindelof, who was behind the Emmy favorite Watchmen, is also attached to Lanterns as a writer and executive producer.

Favorably compared to True Detective, another Emmy-winning series, Lanterns follows “Hal Jordan, a legend among the space police force known as the Green Lanterns,” as he reluctantly mentors a younger Green Lantern, John Stewart (Aaron Pierre) as the two intergalactic cops get “drawn into a dark, Earth-based mystery as they investigate a murder in the American heartland.”

Lanterns is scheduled to premiere on HBO in early 2026 as part of the DCU’s Chapter 1: Gods and Monsters.
