Hideo Kojima, creator of Metal Gear, and film director Guillermo del Toro will likely collaborate again at some point, the duo said during a discussion at the DICE Summit in Las Vegas on Thursday.
"I'll do whatever the fuck he wants," said the director of Pan's Labyrinth, gesturing towards Kojima. "Whatever he says, I'll do."
"Of course, I'd love to," Kojima added.
Del Toro and Kojima were poised to collaborate on Silent Hills, a psychological horror game that was to star Norman Reedus (The Walking Dead). But Kojima's ouster from game publisher Konami put the kibosh on that. Now, with an independent studio and a deal with Sony to make a PlayStation 4 game, Kojima has more leeway to pair up with other creators and work on passion projects.
"I feel extremely free right now," Kojima said. "I have no intentions of ever changing anything I do in order to sell more [copies]."
Kojima said his PlayStation 4 title is a "big game."
"At first, I thought I'd take a year to make a small indie game, or a movie, or write a novel," Kojima said. "But then I talked with friends and acquaintances from all over the world and pretty much everyone said the same thing... sorry, but you don't have time for that, you have to go back to working on something big, because that's what people expect from you."
Del Toro and Kojima are close friends; the two spoke of hanging out and singing karaoke together in Tokyo. Prior to their meeting, the two had inspired each other through their creative works; Kojima said he particularly enjoyed Pan's Labyrinth, while Del Toro spoke of how much he enjoyed the fourth-wall-breaking "Psycho Mantis" scene in 1997's Metal Gear Solid.
"It crystallized my admiration for him," Del Toro said.
