Inhaler, the Irish rock band, recently made a splash on the Australian radio station triple j's long-running covers segment, Like a Version. During their most recent visit to Australia earlier this month, the group offered a re-imagining of Kavinsky's "Nightcall," a track that has become a cultural touchstone due to its appearance in the title sequence of Nicolas Winding Refn's 2011 film Drive. Before their Like a Version set, there was a rumor circulating on social media that Inhaler would be covering Benson Boone's "Mystical Magical," but the rumor turned out to be untrue. Instead, the band chose to perform "Nightcall," which was originally released in 2010 and later featured on Kavinsky's debut album, OutRun (2013). The track also features production work from Daft Punk's Guy-Manuel de Homem-Christo. In an interview following their performance, Inhaler's Elijah Hewson explained that they chose "Nightcall" because it was a movie soundtrack that felt different from covering a normal pop song. "I snuck it into our pre-show playlist, and that was kind of a nice way of testing the waters," added Robert Keating. "So I'm kind of hoping that all our fans have already got it ingrained in their memory." The Like a Version series, which first launched in 2004, has evolved from being a near-impromptu acoustic affair to featuring larger studio productions. Numerous artists have taken part over the past two decades, with the likes of Billie Eilish, Childish Gambino, Arctic Monkeys, and more reinventing classic tracks in the process.
