Bunq, a Dutch neobank catering to global citizens, has partnered with Kraken to bring seamless crypto integration directly into its app. This collaboration aims to make crypto services more accessible and user-friendly for the bank's existing customers.
Bunq's Chief Strategy Officer, Bianca Zwart, and Kraken's head of payments and blockchain, Brett McLain, discussed the partnership's benefits during an interview. Zwart highlighted the growing interest in crypto among Bunq users who find existing options complex or risky. "For years, crypto has been for early adopters. But lately, we've noticed a shift. More and more people are interested in starting out with crypto, but they don't know where to start and they want to do it in an environment that they trust," she said.
The integration of crypto alongside Bunq's banking, savings, and investing features allows existing users to begin without additional identity checks or learning new platforms. Buying Bitcoin can be done with a single swipe and from as little as one euro. Bunq has also introduced industry-first safety features like its safety shield, which delays crypto transfers for 24 hours to prevent potential fraud.
Bunq supports over 300 coins, with Bitcoin, Ethereum, Solana, and XRP among the most popular so far. These are presented in an easy-to-navigate overview within the app. As per Kraken's price feeds, Bitcoin is up 5% in the past 24 hours, trading at $105,430.
Zwart praised Kraken's infrastructure and security standards as key reasons for choosing the exchange. "We're aligned from day one. We have the same mindset, same obsession with the user, with safety, with experience," she said. The integration took around eight weeks to complete.
McLain sees embedding crypto into everyday banking as a way to accelerate global adoption. "We want to enable other businesses like Bunq to ensure that their clients have access to our leading liquidity, the selection of assets that we have, all the other products and services, the security, the safety," he said.
According to Bunq's research, 65% of European global citizens want one single platform to manage their banking, savings, and crypto. Many are curious but hesitant until they find a familiar, safe environment.
