Over A Million Previously Recalled Ram Trucks Under Investigation

Almost 1.2 million Ram trucks which were fixed under a previous recall might be recalled again, depending on the results of an investigation. The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration is investigating the problem after its Office of Defects Investigation received 14 separate owner complaints, plus six death and injury reports.

A midsize Ram truck is finally in the works.

According to NHTSA’s ODI, involves involves both Ram 1500 and Heavy Duty trucks in the 2013 to 2018 model years rolling away while in park. Some of those trucks were included in two transmission-related recalls in 2017 and 2018.

Each of the affected trucks has a column-mounted shifter. Originally, the problem which was thought to have been fixed was that the brake transmission shift interlock system would get stuck in the open position, meaning the shifter could be activated even though there was no key in the ignition and the brake pedal wasn’t depressed.

It’s possible that wasn’t the reason for the rollaways in the first place – that’s one thing investigators are looking into. Something else might have caused the more recent problems, but nothing is conclusively known right now.

Instead, Ram owners are left to wait and hope they don’t run into problems.

Obviously, having your parked truck suddenly roll away can be a serious problem. After all, the pickup might run right over a person, hit a building, or cause a crash with another vehicle that’s parked or moving.

It could happen in your driveway or in a public parking lot. In the latter scenario, you don’t even have to own a Ram to have this become an immediate problem for you. Considering the size of the trucks involved, especially the Heavy Duty models, that’s concerning.

We’ll see what ODI concludes, hopefully sooner than later.
