Pearl Jam’s longtime drummer Matt Cameron announces departure from rock band
(WJW) — Matt Cameron, the longtime drummer for the rock band Pearl Jam, announced Monday he was leaving the group.
He made the announcement in a post on Instagram that amassed thousands of reactions and comments in a matter of hours.

“After 27 fantastic years, I have taken my final steps down the drum riser for the mighty Pearl Jam. Much love and respect to Jeff,Ed, Mike, and Stone for inviting me into the band in 1998 and for giving me the opportunity of a lifetime, one filled with friendships, artistry, challenges and laughter,” he wrote. “I am forever grateful to the crew, staff and fans the world over. It’s been an incredible journey. More to follow. Thank you all from the bottom of my heart. Peace and Love, Matt Cameron.”

The next year he joined Pearl Jam, also formed in Seattle, and played on seven albums for the band.
Cameron rejoined Soundgarden when the group reunited in 2010 and played with both bands simultaneously. He remained with Soundgarden until 2017 when the band broke up again following the death of lead singer Chris Cornell.

Cameron was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame with both bands — Pearl Jam in 2017 and Soundgarden in 2025.
