Former Verve frontman Richard Ashcroft took to social media to respond to an Oasis fan who didn’t recognize the band’s iconic song “Bitter Sweet Symphony.”

The initial incident unfolded Friday, July 4, in Cardiff, Wales, as Ashcroft opened for Oasis before the band’s first show in 16 years.

The video showed a young woman in the audience bopping along to The Verve’s 1997 hit while looking up the famous tune on the song-identifier app.

Ashcroft then took to Instagram to “welcome” the Oasis fan in question to his and The Verve’s music.

The fan faced major backlash from other fans of the disbanded English rock group.

“Day 2 thanks to everyone who came down and gave such beautiful support for my set,” he wrote on Sunday alongside a clip from his performance. “If you don’t know it Shazam it, all new fans welcome!”

Still, the person caught Shazaming “Bitter Sweet Symphony” during the Cardiff show faced significant backlash from other fans of the disbanded English rock group.

“Very embarrassing,” one person wrote on X after watching the viral clip.

“Wow!” added another. “This is just crazy!”

“She should have been escorted off the premises,” commented a third Ashcroft fan.

However, others supported the Oasis fan and rushed to her defense.

“Not everyone is 50 years old,” one person commented alongside a laughing emoji.

“Everyone has their own music journey,” another wrote, while a third X user added, “So what’s the problem?”

Meanwhile, Ashcroft’s performance at the Principality Stadium on Friday came shortly before Liam and Noel Gallagher took the stage to kick off their first Oasis concert in nearly two decades.

Although the beloved band broke up following a backstage fight between the famous brothers at the Rock en Seine festival in August 2009, they announced last summer that the group was reuniting for an Oasis Live ’25 world tour.

Liam, 52, and Noel, 58, showed unity when they walked out and raised their hands together before jumping into their first song.
