Steven Spielberg isn’t going anywhere anytime soon.

Yesterday, Universal Pictures held an event to honor Academy Award-winning filmmaker Steven Spielberg, where the studio unveiled its newest screening room dedicated to the Jaws and E.T. director.

During the event, Spielberg gave a speech centered around the rebirth of the movie studios and shared a retirement update with those in attendance.

What was Steven Spielberg’s retirement update?

Towards the end speech, Spielberg shared his plans for the future, confirming that he actually has no plans of ever retiring from directing movies. This comes ahead of its highly anticipated UFO movie, which will arrive in theaters next summer.

“Just know that I love all of you. And, um, I’m making a lot of movies and I have no plans, ever, to retire,” Spielberg said.

The untitled UFO movie features a screenplay written by Jurassic Park scribe David Koepp, based on a story by the Oscar-winning filmmaker. This marks Spielberg’s first sci-fi movie since directing the 2018 film adaptation of Ready Player One. This will be Spielberg’s latest directorial feature project since helming 2022’s The Fabelmans, which was loosely based on his early life. That movie was nominated for seven Academy Awards, including Best Picture, Best Director, Best Actress (Michelle Williams), and Best Supporting Actor (Judd Hirsch).

The ensemble cast of the UFO film includes Emily Blunt (Oppenheimer), Wyatt Russell (Thunderbolts*), Josh O’Connor (The Crown), Colman Domingo (Rustin), Colin Firth (The King’s Speech), Eve Hewson (The Perfect Couple), and Noah Robbins (Fly Me to the Moon). It is produced by Spielberg and Kristie Macosko Krieger for Amblin Entertainment, along with Chris Brigham.

Production on the UFO movie has officially wrapped. While plot details remain heavily under wraps at this time, it currently has a June 12, 2026, release date from Universal Pictures.
