Superman Box Office Breaks 3 Records, Off to Great Start

James Gunn‘s Superman is on its way to box office glory after a strong Thursday night.

What box office records did Superman set?

Superman earned $22.5 million in Thursday previews, a total that includes the $2.8 million collected from Tuesday’s Amazon Prime Member screenings. Even if you subtract the Tuesday gross, Superman has still broken three major box office preview records. The first DC Universe blockbuster has soared past Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3’s $17.5 million to become Gunn’s best preview box office. Superman has also eclipsed the $14.5 million Lilo & Stitch made earlier this year to hold the record for best previews of 2025.

Lastly, at $22.5 million, Superman has crushed the $9 million that Zack Snyder’s Man of Steel grossed back in 2013 to snag the title for best preview box office for a solo Superman movie. However, Gunn’s Superman was not able to best the massive $27.7 million preview box office of Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice, meaning that the 2016 movie will hold onto the record for best previews for a movie featuring the Man of Steel.

While early box office tracking for Superman suggested an opening weekend of around $100 million, those estimates have now risen to between $140 million and $150 million, thanks to the strong Thursday previews. With international markets expected to do $100 million-plus, Warner Bros. and DC Studios are looking at a global opening weekend of $250 million or greater for Superman.

Written and directed by Gunn, Superman stars David Corenswet as Clark Kent/Superman, who must prove to the world that he is their protector after billionaire Lex Luthor, portrayed by Nicholas Hoult, conducts a plan to turn public opinion against him. Rachel Brosnahan co-stars as Lois Lane, while Edi Gathegi, Anthony Carrigan, Nathan Fillion, and Isabela Merced round out the ensemble cast as superheroes Mister Terrific, Metamorpho, Green Lantern, and Hawkgirl, respectively.

Superman is now playing in theaters, as the first film in the DCU‘s Chapter 1: Gods & Monsters.
