That’s A Lot Of Cheese: Mozzarella Spill Shuts Down Interstate

A crash involving three semi-trucks in Pennsylvania resulted in shredded mozzarella cheese covering an interstate. It’s the kind of mess you’d expect a troop of toddlers to leave in your kitchen, not some truck drivers on a major thoroughfare.

The aftermath of a General Lee jump in a small town is quite dramatic.

The accident went down on eastbound Interstate 80 in Clearfield County, Pennsylvania at around 5 am on July 2. How the trucks collided with each other isn’t clear, but you can see conditions were foggy at the time.

Two of the semi trailers were damaged in the crash. One spilled boxed up containers of hand wipes out onto the road, making cleaning them up relatively easy. But the other was carrying the cheese and the trailer was just destroyed.

That meant the cheese was ripped out of many of the packages, covering the asphalt like one giant pizza. The debris field was 200 yards long or two football fields.

It’s no wonder authorities had to work for hours clearing the interstate. While the mozzarella spill is certainly hilarious, the stuff would be slippery to drive on, resulting in other cheese-related accidents.

All of it was eventually cleared, but shutting down the interstate lanes caused a bit of a traffic snafu.

Sadly, the cheese wasn’t given to homeless shelters or made its way to grocery stores. Instead, it was all hucked in the local landfill. That might seem wasteful, but there was a good reason for the move.

Snow Shoe Fire Department, which assisted with the crash cleanup, said the cheese wasn’t safe to eat anymore because it had sat out of refrigeration for a long time. Plus, can you image picking glass shards and pebbles out of your pizza? We think tossing it all was the right decision.
