Aspen, Colorado: The Most Expensive Tourist Destination for a Year-round Getaway
When it comes to traveling, many people are always on the lookout for the cheapest deals on beaches, hotels, and flights. However, for those who are willing to splurge or simply want to know where the most expensive destinations are, a new study from GOBankingRates has revealed the five most expensive U.S. tourist destinations.
The study analyzed 91 of the top U.S. destinations as determined by Travel + Leisure reporting and narrowed it down to 55 cities. Using census data and Numbeo’s cost of living tool, they determined how much it would cost for two adults to visit each location for three nights, including meals at a mixture of mid-range and inexpensive restaurants, and the cost of domestic beer. Average hotel and flight prices were also factored in.
The results may surprise you, as the nation’s most expensive destination is not a typical beach getaway but a ski resort town. Aspen, Colorado, is known for its world-class skiing in winter and scenic hiking and biking trails in summer. Despite its beauty and abundance of activities, it is also incredibly expensive. The study found that two people will spend $2,708 for three days in Aspen, with airfare being the costliest part of the trip at more than $1,300 on average. Hotel costs come in at around $791 for a three-night stay, while meals will set you back around $510.
While Aspen may be the most expensive destination overall, other cities also made the list. Santa Barbara, California, Anchorage, Alaska, Bar Harbor, Maine, and Fairbanks, Alaska all made the top five most expensive U.S. cities to visit. These destinations are known for their natural beauty, outdoor activities, and luxury accommodations, which come at a high price tag.
For those looking for more affordable options, Florida cities average $1,630 per person for a three-day visit, making it slightly more affordable than the second most affordable state, California. The cheapest place to buy a beer is Branson, Missouri, where it costs an average of $3.50. This makes it a great option for those looking to save on their travel expenses while still enjoying a fun-filled vacation.
