This North Carolina Getaway Has Everything You Want In A City—Except The Crowds

IliasTravel2025-07-283330

One of the best things about the South is our sheer number of amazing mid-sized cities. Sure, we also have bustling metropolises like Charlotte, Atlanta, and Houston, but smaller destinations—like Durham, North Carolina—showcase the best of both worlds.

Durham has all the charm of a small town, paired with the cultural and culinary highlights you may expect in a more populous area. Part of the Research Triangle, the 301,000-person city is most famously home to Duke University and Duke University Hospital. The latter, along with over 300 medical practices and medical and health-related companies, is why Durham’s list of nicknames includes the “City of Medicine.”

Outside of the medical industry, Durham has an interesting story and an ever-growing list of reasons to visit. Along with a revived downtown area, locally owned boutiques, and delightful green spaces to explore, there’s contemporary art, historical sites, and some of the best restaurants in the Piedmont region (a select few of which have received nods from the James Beard Foundation over the years).
