Back in March, Amazon announced a joint venture into the world of James Bond, with plans to produce the 26th official film in the series.

Amazon recently revealed that the film will be directed by Denis Villeneuve, with Amy Pascal and David Heyman serving as producers.

According to Variety, Villeneuve was in the running for the role with four European directors, including Edward Berger, Edgar Wright, Paul King, and Jonathan Nolan.

Now the search is on for an actor who will be able to undertake the newest iteration of James Bond. In the past, the title character has been played by seven different actors across a span of 59 years. Sean Connery, David Niven, George Lazenby, Roger Moore, Timothy Dalton, and Pierce Brosnan all portrayed 007. Daniel Craig starred as the most recent Bond from 2006 to 2021.

Sources from Variety claim Amazon is eyeing actors under the age of 30 for the iconic role. Jacob Elordi, Tom Holland, and Harris Dickinson currently top the list as potential candidates, according to Variety.

There was speculation that actors such as Aaron Taylor-Johnson or Henry Cavill might undertake the role of Bond; however, their respective ages of 35 and 42 might put them out of the running, although anything is possible because the final decision has not yet been announced.

Iris Elba, a longtime fan favorite for the role, would also be over the age limit at 52.

The announcement was met with some criticism on X. One fan said, “They’re talented no doubt, but Bond's too iconic to be reduced to just a trending pretty face. It’s gotta feel like Bond.” Another was quoted as saying, “We don't want a Bond who's barely out of his teens; we want a mature, experienced, accomplished man.”

However, others seemed to support the plan, stating, “Jacob Elordi can make it.”

Amazon is looking at a release date for the film sometime in 2028.
