Tokyo Drift Mazda RX-7 Veilside Sells For $1.2 Million

The Mazda RX-7 FD Veilside used in Fast and Furious: Tokyo Drift was just auctioned off in the UK for a whopping $1.2 million. While the rotary-powered and heavily modified sports car is a movie icon and perhaps one of the best-preserved examples out there, the top bid amount is still shocking.

According to the lot listing, this movie car is one of only two known to have survived after filming for Tokyo Drift wrapped. It was used for some stunt scenes, although not any drifting, as well as some static shots.

The latter is why the Mazda RX-7 is pretty and has a fully finished interior. The dirty truth is a lot of movie cars are rough, unless they’re a “hero” car used in close-up and interior shots.

Fans of the Fast and Furious franchise know this car was driven by Han in the movie, played by actor Sung Kang, who is a favorite among many. That likely played into its ridiculous top bid.

Thanks to the aggressive Veilside Fortune widebody kit installed by the Japanese tuner, the only body parts that are original from the factory are the roof and tailgate. The sports car is made 200 mm wider, plus it rides on 19-inch Andrew Premier Series Racing Evolution 5 wheels wrapped with Pirelli P Zero Nero tires.

The result is a look many have tried imitating over the years, just like the Eclipse and Supra from the first Fast and Furious movie.

Adding to the mystique and helping to verify this car’s identify were production markings made by Universal Studios still visible in several spots, plus spots where camera mounts were used also still obvious to the naked eye.

This just goes to show that even as the collector car market in general is going down, some movie cars still hold plenty of value, at least for enough deep-pocketed collectors.
