The 2026 World Cup, the most anticipated mega event of its kind, is set to take place in North America next summer. However, despite the excitement surrounding the tournament, many Americans seem to be unaware of the upcoming celebration. To address this issue, a series of smaller soccer events will be held at nine of the 11 U.S. stadiums that will host the World Cup in 2025. These events serve as both tests of readiness and opportunities for officials in those cities to create awareness and excitement for the World Cup.

In Philadelphia, for example, the Club World Cup is seen as an opportunity to drive interest and enthusiasm towards the 2026 World Cup. Meg Kane, the CEO of Philly's World Cup host committee, told Yahoo Sports that the event is an opportunity to assess security plans and the "resiliency" of Philadelphia's public transportation system under the stress of an influx of international soccer fans. Other host committee heads see this as a chance to disprove concerns that the U.S. is not ready for the millions of visitors expected during the World Cup.

The 2026 World Cup will be a unique event, requiring resources and processes unlike any previously held by local organizers and U.S. government officials. Despite this, they are approaching 2025 as a series of dress rehearsals, beginning with the CONCACAF Nations League finals at SoFi Stadium in Inglewood, California, this week. SoFi Stadium will host the top four men's national teams in North and Central America, followed by CONCACAF Gold Cup games in June, with an April friendly pitting the U.S. women's national team vs. Brazil sandwiched in between.

Adolfo Romero, SoFi Stadium's VP of events, said that these events will provide three opportunities to test out everything they want to do in preparation for the World Cup. The schedule is designed to mimic a World Cup, with two semifinals on Thursday (U.S. vs. Panama, Mexico vs. Canada), a third-place match and final on Sunday, and two off days in between. Romero and his colleagues see this as a chance for a dry run, with a concert at Hollywood Park's theatre on Friday, a "community day" on Saturday, and a "fan zone" with food trucks and other activities throughout the event.

Inside the stadium, engineers and agronomists will also evaluate a recently installed, highly specialized "hybrid" grass field. The 2026 World Cup is expected to be a celebration unlike any other, and these smaller events are serving as a way to prepare for the big event while creating excitement and awareness among Americans for the upcoming tournament.
