President Trump’s so-called “big, beautiful bill” has been in the news for weeks as it struggles to get through the Senate.

Acclaimed singer-actor Jason Isbell, who is never shy to share his beliefs on social media, offered his own version in a recent post on Threads.

“In my house this is the big beautiful Bill,” Isbell posted along with a photo of former R.E.M. drummer Bill Berry, who is nearly as well known for his unibrow as he is for his songwriting and skills on the drum kit.

Isbell, who acted in Martin Scorsese’s Killers of the Flower Moon alongside Leonardo DiCaprio and Robert De Niro, is a big R.E.M. fan. He performed “It’s the End of the World as We Know It (and I Feel Fine)” when the band was inducted into the Songwriters Hall of Fame in 2024 and recorded the band’s classics “Driver 8” and “Nightswimming” on the 2021 compilation Georgia Blue, a charity album featuring cover songs of artists from Georgia.

Berry is a founding member of R.E.M., but left the band in 1997, two years after he suffered a brain aneurysm while on tour with the band. R.E.M. continued after Berry’s departure as a trio aided by support musicians, leaving singer Michael Stipe to proclaim at the time the band felt like a “three-legged dog” and would have to “learn to run differently.”

Isbell’s followers on Threads approved of the post, with one writing, “Oh, man, that’s perfect!”

Another simply proclaimed, “Genius.”

Some others offered their own favorite Bills, posting photos of bluegrass pioneer Bill Monroe and the likeness of blues legend Big Bill Broonzy.

Another offered some humor. “He's Berry, Berry good. I'll show myself out,” they wrote.

“Irony - this Bill and the Big Beautiful bill are responsible for ‘Everybody Hurts’,” another quipped, referring to the 1992 R.E.M. hit.

A few others threw out some compliments to the members of R.E.M. and Isbell.

“I’ve said before that if I had to fight R.E.M. for some reason he and Peter would both whoop my ass,” wrote one fan, referring to former R.E.M. guitarist Peter Buck.

“That is my drummer of choice please,” added another. “That being said, Jason your show and band kicked ass in Birmingham last night. Thank you!”
