As Sucker Punch continues to pull back the curtain on Ghost of Yotei ahead of its October 2 release, this latest round of details puts the focus on Atsu’s wolf companion. They also shed some light on how Atsu’s bounty-hunting journey across Ezo will shape the Ghost of Yotei gameplay, impacting the story and the world around her as she moves through it.

Sony recently aired a deep-dive State of Play showcase for Ghost of Yotei, offering a detailed look at some of the game’s new features. One of the most noticeable changes is the open-ended exploration system, which drops the traditional mini-map in favor of natural guidance. Players will rely on cues like wind direction and animals to discover key areas. Ghost of Yotei also brings seamless flashbacks to Atsu’s past, and there are night campfires where NPCs can approach. Additionally, full Japanese voiceover is supported, complete with accurate lip-syncing to enhance the experience.

Ghost of Yotei may provide a wealth of new features, but, at the end of the day, it may be more of a 'Ghost of Tsushima 2' and less of a blank canvas.

In a new interview with GamesRadar, creative director Nate Fox gave more context around Atsu’s wolf companion, calling it "much more elaborate" than players might expect and highlighting its emotional significance. The wolf was meant to reflect the "wild Ezo" and gradually became a bigger part of the game after striking a chord with the team. Though it does help in combat, Fox stressed that Atsu's wolf companion "has a mind" of its own and isn’t a typical pet. "It’s not your dog," he explained. It won’t take direct orders and doesn’t show up all the time. Instead, it appears in key moments, driven by the situation, reinforcing its role as something untamed and symbolic rather than a consistent partner.

Director Jason Connell also touched on the game's bounty system, which tracks Atsu’s increasing notoriety. As she stirs up trouble for the Yotei Six, enemy factions begin to “take notice,” and that affects how the world reacts. Connell mentioned that “each time that bounty goes up", things change, different enemy archetypes might appear, and surprise ambushes or traps could be triggered. The system “reflects the danger” of Ezo, dynamically raising the stakes and making Ghost of Yotei's exploration more intense.

Beyond the new details, Ghost of Yotei fans are already hyped about some previously announced features. The game will ship with three distinct game modes, including the standout Watanabe Mode. Developed in collaboration with Samurai Champloo director Shinichiro Watanabe, the mode lets players explore while listening to original lo-fi tracks created by Watanabe himself. It’s meant to capture that laid-back, nostalgic vibe familiar to fans of his anime work.
