Miros secures new contract for vessel performance technology

Miros has secured a commercial shipping contract for its Vessel Technical Index (VTI), a vessel performance monitoring technology.

This contract with an undisclosed shipping company is the third agreement signed by Miros for the technology.

VTI is a novel metric recommended by DNV that assesses a vessel's technical performance against a reference point, such as its condition when new.

By factoring out the influence of weather, load, and other operational variables, the VTI provides a clear picture of a ship's actual performance.

Utilising Miros' speed-through-water (STW) and wave measurements, the Miros VTI service operates through Miros Cloud and offers hourly updates.

The technology helps shipowners and operators to accurately evaluate real-time vessel performance or determine the optimal times for maintenance activities such as hull or propeller cleaning.

Miros chief technology officer Gunnar Prytz said: “Miros’ VTI significantly reduces the guesswork in vessel performance. This new approach will allow operators to plan hull and propeller maintenance based on real vessel status.

“Unlike traditional vessel performance analyses which are typically based on low-accuracy wave and STW data, the Miros VTI powered by accurate, real-time sea state measurements delivers high-frequency and high-fidelity insights that can be up to ten times faster, ten times more accurate and ten times more valuable than the standard industry applications used in the shipping industry, making voyages more predictable and profitable.”

VTI also enables precise documentation of ship performance in charter agreements and accurate assessment of the impact of energy-saving devices.

The solution enhances performance visibility, standardises data-driven fleet management, and contributes to reduced fuel consumption, lower emissions, and improved cost efficiency.

Miros CEO Marius Five Aarset said: “As the shipping industry faces increasing pressure to reduce emissions and comply with tightening regulations, Miros’ Vessel Technical Index positions itself as a critical tool for sustainable success.

“Calculating energy use, removing external force impact, and comparing it to pure water resistance in real-time, the technology streamlines the process by generating high-quality insights that enhance operational efficiency while reducing costs.”

In November 2024, Miros introduced PredictifAI, a new technology for predicting wave and vessel motions in real-time.

PredictifAI employs artificial intelligence in combination with X-band radar and accurate wave height measurements to improve safety in maritime operations by adapting to changing sea and weather conditions.
