Mirror's Edge: Catalyst, the open-world followup to the frankly excellent and frankly underselling dystopian free-runner Mirror's Edge, is going into closed beta testing in advance of its May 24 release date, Electronic Arts said today. Signups are open to anyone with an account with EA's online service, Origin (it's free), and the beta will be available on all the game's release platforms: Xbox One, PlayStation 4, and PC.
Alongside the beta, EA has released a story trailer, giving hints to the narrative arc of the young heroine, Faith, who faces down a tyrannical government (a city? a country? Story was not the original's strong point) by running on rooftops, stealing and sharing information that the powers that be don't want shared. It appears to be an origin story for the heroic messenger, who will be facing down a despotic leader named Gabriel Kruger. By all appearances, Catalyst seeks to be amping up the drama every way it knows how. There's a lot of shouting.
