Ten classic Call of Duty games, including iconic entries such as Black Ops 2, World at War, and the original Modern Warfare 2, will be undergoing server maintenance on July 2 for a mysterious background update. Although it's not unheard of for newer Call of Duty titles, such as last year's Black Ops 6, to receive new content updates and hotfixes, entries that were released in the days of the PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360 don't usually receive the same treatment, which has led to some confusion among the community.
Developer Treyarch Studios and Raven Software currently have their full attention on launching Call of Duty's big Season 4 Reloaded update. The new mid-season patch is set to go live on July 2 for PlayStation 4, PlayStation 5, Xbox One, Xbox Series X/S, and PC. With Season 4 now at the halfway point of its lifecycle, fans are eager to check out some new content with the mid-season refresh. From the return of Fringe, an iconic Black Ops 3 map, to the debut of Resurgence Casual in Call of Duty: Warzone, Season 4 Reloaded is going to have something for everyone to jump into later today.

PostsShortly after revealing Call of Duty's Season 4 Reloaded patch notes, Activision announced that there would be some lengthy server maintenance for both older and newer titles. Between the hours of 3 AM and 7 AM PT on Wednesday, July 2, various Call of Duty titles, including Modern Warfare 2, Black Ops, Modern Warfare 3, Black Ops 2, Ghosts, Advanced Warfare, Black Ops 3, World War 2, Modern Warfare 2 (2022), and Modern Warfare 3 (2023), will all be offline. Unfortunately, why all of these titles are receiving some sort of mysterious background update remains unknown, as Activision did not disclose the reason for the sudden server maintenance.
Call of Duty Fans Speculate on Mysterious Update
The unexpected update for these iconic Call of Duty games has led to rampant speculation among the community. Some Twitter users, such as DANNYonPC, are speculating that the server maintenance could be to bring more Call of Duty games to Xbox Game Pass. But with the likes of World War 2 and 2023's Modern Warfare 3 already on Game Pass, not everyone is so sure. Others believe that Activision may finally be implementing a better anti-cheat system for some of the older entries in the series, such as the original Modern Warfare 2 and Black Ops. Many of these classic titles are unplayable online, as most servers have been taken over by hackers and cheaters.
CloseThere's also the possibility that this is nothing more than a background update that will have no effect on players, but only time will tell. There has been a continued effort by Activision and Microsoft to bring older Call of Duty games to Game Pass, which means today's server maintenance could be part of the studio's future plans.
It was just earlier this week that Call of Duty: WW2 was added to Xbox Game Pass, making it the fourth entry in the series to release on the service. Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3 (2023) was the first to join the service, followed by a day one release for Black Ops 6, then 2022's Modern Warfare 2, and, most recently, Sledgehammer Games' 2017 title, WW2.
