There’s been plenty of arguing in the past week over who caused a horrific crash on the Nurburgring recently. Shocking footage of the wreck between a Porsche 911 GT3 RS and BMW M2 has captivated many, especially because it ends in a fiery mess or wreckage.
Watch a C8 Corvette crash big at Laguna Seca.
Miraculously, both drivers were able to walk away from the accident, a testimony of the effectiveness of modern safety innovations. But now they both will need to navigate the financial mess in the wake of the crash.
After all, both vehicles are almost certainly totaled. With damage to the track, someone’s going to have to shell out some big money to fix things. Insurance might cover a portion, but they will have to assign fault.
And that’s where a lot of people on the internet are stuck fighting. Some believe the crash was caused by the Porsche driver’s unsafe passing on the Nurburgring, but others believe the BMW driver holds all the blame.
Those on the side of the M2 driver look at the dashcam footage posted to Reddit and argue the Porsche driver tried passing when it wasn’t safe as the two cars entered a turn. In their minds, passing on a the inside of a turn is just asking for a crash.
Others who are on the side of the Porsche driver argue he waited to pass until the Bimmer driver pulled to the right, but then the other guy clipped his back end as the two went through the turn.
Right after that, both vehicles careened into the barrier, exploding in a glorious fireball.
Some have pointed out the M2 appears to be a right-hand-drive model. Perhaps someone ventured from the UK to Germany to visit the famous Nurburgring. Since Brits aren’t as familiar with the convention the rest of us who drive correctly have of passing on the left, that might have contributed to the crash.
If that’s the case, the BMW driver has no excuse. Any of us driving in the UK would be expected to adhere to the right-hand-drive safety practices, so the same is true when Brits go to countries that drive on the left.
