The popular paranormal horror game Phasmophobia has released a major update titled "Chronicle," introducing over 140 changes to the core investigative gameplay and long-term progression. The update, identified by version number 0.13, brings several significant changes to the game's evidence system, including new types of media and a complete overhaul of the reward and progression system.
The update introduces new evidence types such as videos and sounds, allowing players to capture up to five video clips and three audio clips per investigation using the new video camera and sound recorder respectively. The maximum number of photos allowed per investigation has been reduced from ten to five, and new types of photos can be gathered, including EMF readings and three ghost forms.
The update also expands optional objectives and challenges, including equipment-focused missions and update-specific tasks. Dozens of bug fixes are included in the package, together with UI improvements such as playstyle and platform filters for lobbies.
The Chronicle update is available for download across all platforms: PS5, PS VR2, Xbox Series X/S, and PC. Here are some of the key changes and additions in the update:
- New Evidence Types: Videos and Sounds - Players can now capture video footage during an investigation using the video camera. The Sound Recorder, available from Level 4, can capture up to three sounds per contract, including paranormal sounds and Spirit Box responses.
- Photos System Changes - The maximum number of photos allowed per investigation has been reduced from ten to five. New types of photos can be gathered, including EMF readings and three ghost forms (Physical, D.O.T.S., and Shadow). Photos of light switches, door movements, thrown objects, and ghost interactions with various objects have been moved to the video media category.
- Unique Media System - Replaced the three-star rating system with the new Unique/Duplicate system. The first time a piece of media is captured during a contract, it is marked Unique. Subsequent captures are marked as Duplicate and reward less money and experience. Up to three pieces of media can now be deleted during an investigation, up from two previously.
- Rewards and Progression Changes - Using higher tiers of the Photo Camera, Video Camera, and Sound Recorder will reward players with an additional monetary bonus per piece of media. Equipment and their corresponding tiers are now unlocked earlier, and tier upgrades are now unlocked in groups of two or three.
- Challenges and Optional Objectives - Introduced new challenges such as capturing unique photos and videos with cameras and the Sound Recorder. Changed existing challenges, such as finding evidence of paranormal activity with an EMF Reader.
- User Interface Improvements - The Main Menu has been reworked while retaining the same functionality. Players can now set Playstyle (Casual, Hardcore, and Roleplay) and Hardware preferences (VR Required and Microphone Required) when creating a room. Players can filter by these options and difficulties on the lobby browser.
- Bug Fixes and Known Issues - Fixed several bugs related to player movement, item placement, and UI issues. Known issues include some trophies not being visible in the main lobby on certain platforms and audio levels being too high on some sounds. These issues will be addressed in future patches.
The Chronicle update brings a significant overhaul to Phasmophobia's investigative gameplay and evidence system, providing players with more immersive and rewarding experiences. The update is available now for all platforms.
