A new game is making waves in the gaming industry, and it's not just because of its fast-paced, arcade-style gameplay. Rematch, a third-person soccer game developed by the same studio that created the successful roguelike beat 'em up Sifu, has captured the attention of players and critics alike. In an interview with PC Gamer, the executive producer of Rematch, Pierre Tarno, revealed that despite industry expectations for online competitive games to adopt a free-to-play model, he never considered it. Instead, he focused on creating "a very good game."
Rematch introduces players to a unique soccer experience where they control one player at a time and can attack, defend, or even become a goalkeeper. The game sets itself apart from traditional soccer games by featuring no fouls, offsides, throw-ins, or goal kicks. Matches play continuously in a walled-in arena that keeps the ball in play, allowing players to dribble, aim, and shoot with a physicality that resembles Sifu. The game is available on PC, PlayStation 5, and Xbox Series X|S and supports 3v3, 4v4, and 5v5 matches.
Tarno explained that he doesn't believe in "formulas" or "secrets" to making a successful game. Instead, he believes that if a game is original, solid, and reasonably priced, players will like it. This seems to be the case with Rematch's recent wave of positive reviews. The developer also likes to offer players a challenge, something that was evident in its previous hit, Sifu.
Rematch has seen significant success since its release in June. The game reached over 1 million players after its day-one release on Xbox Game Pass in less than 24 hours and has also seen success on Steam, peaking at 92,841 simultaneous players. The developer has promised to bring seasonal updates with new modes, maps, and cosmetic content in the future.
With its unique mechanics and captivating gameplay, Rematch is sure to continue growing in popularity. If you're looking for a fresh take on soccer games, Rematch is definitely worth checking out.
