Shawn Hatosy Reveals If He’d Like To Resurrect ‘Dexter’ Serial Killer Role; Talks Working With Jason Beghe On ‘Chicago P.D.’

Clyde Phillips’ Dexter: Resurrection has been reanimating many of the franchise’s most prolific serial killers, including the titular Dexter Morgan (Michael C. Hall), alongside cameos from John Lithgow as Arthur “Trinity Killer” Mitchell, and Jimmy Smits as Miguel Prado in the Season 1 premiere. And while they have their freshman season already in the can, there are plenty of other names to throw into the hat.
In conversation with Deadline following the announcement of his first Emmy nomination for his work in HBO Max’s The Pitt, Hatosy reflected on some of the most impactful characters he’s played, including serial killer Boyd Fowler from Dexter‘s fifth season. He noted in our story yesterday that when picking characters, he tries to find something to love about them.

So much going on; talk about layers,” Hatosy said about potentially reprising the role on the new Showtime spinoff. “I really enjoyed getting into those shoes. Talk about disturbed. It’s hard to find something to love about Boyd Fowler, but I think I did. I think he has a real appreciation for animals, dead and alive,” he added with a laugh.
Boyd appeared only in episodes two and three of Season 5, but his diabolical actions made a lasting impact on the entire season. Viewers will remember the character for his work cleaning up roadkill from the streets for Miami-Dade County’s Department of Sanitation. Dexter connects with Boyd after discovering blood in a rented van, which records reveal the latter used before the former.
While quietly investigating Boyd, Dexter follows him to a swampy area where he dumps a barrel into the water. Dexter returns in the darkness to have a closer look at the barrel, discovering a dead body inside and multiple other barrels making up a watery graveyard. After a cat and mouse game, Dexter takes Boyd out on his table, but not before Boyd confesses that he killed the women to put them out of their misery.

Hatosy is just coming off a long Season 12 arc on NBC’s Chicago P.D., starring as Deputy Chief Charlie Reid, a dirty cop who blackmails multiple colleagues into doing his dirty work. He goes a step too far when he thinks he can get big boss Voight (Jason Beghe) to fall in line. The season finale shows a desperate Voight orchestrating Reid’s murder, and in the process, pushing well beyond the limits.

I was really excited to share scenes with him, and seeing how somebody who’s been playing a character for that long is still excited about the process, working hard, and figuring out how to make it real. It was a joy,” he concluded.
The story will continue next season on Chicago P.D. without Hatosy, as he focuses on his work on The Pitt, which is currently in production, reading scripts, and gearing up to promote the upcoming film, Ready or Not: Here I Come.
