Warhammer 40K: Space Marine 2 Teases Future Update Plans

WinterGames2025-06-284632

Alongside the release of a new major update to Warhammer 40,000: Space Marine 2, developer Saber Interactive teased that a future update will contain a major overhaul to the game's customization system. Space Marine 2 originally launched in September 2024 and continued the story of its 2011 predecessor.

With the release of a single game in the form of Space Marine 2, Saber Interactive has cemented its position as a major force in the wave of high-quality licensed Warhammer 40,000 space. Beyond reviving the dormant Space Marine series, Space Marine 2 is one of the most popular Warhammer 40,000 games ever. That wave of popularity quickly led Warhammer parent company Games Workshop to quickly commission work on a sequel, meaning that fans can look forward to the series continuing for years into the future.

That said, while Space Marine 3 is still a ways off, Saber is still teasing plans for future game updates. In a blog post commemorating the launch of Space Marine 2 Patch 8.0, Saber Interactive hinted that it is working on a future update to the in-game customization system. According to Saber, the customization update will be "very big," and is set to improve the freedom players have when deciding which parts to use on their customized Astartes Power Armor. Among other things, the customization update will allow players to more freely use Chapter Champion Armor parts across the different Space Marine 2 character classes.

Saber did say that there would be something of a catch to the major Space Marine 2 customization update. While Champion Armor parts would be equippable across classes, the restrictions will not be removed entirely. The post mentioned that "lore accuracy, clipping, and technical restrictions" would play a role in determining which parts would be allowed to cross over to which classes. Space Marine 2 is famously accurate to the Warhammer 40,000 lore, with liaisons from Games Workshop advising Saber developers on armor design. In one notable incident, Saber had to change the design of Space Marine 2 armor ankles to bring the visuals in line with Games Workshop's requirements.

Under the current Space Marine 2 armor customization system, players can select from a variety of cosmetic parts to outfit their characters with for use in Operations, PVP, and even in the single-player campaign. Players can even paint individual pieces and add decals to add even more personalization. However, some restrictions limit the selection, particularly across classes. With multiple playable class types in the game, players are left with a comparatively smaller pool of options to choose from. Removing class restrictions on Champion Armor pieces, even with other considerations taken into account, could significantly improve the part selection available to players across every playable class.

Anticipating the prospective updates hinted at in Warhammer 40K: Space Marine II, I'm eager for a game experience that pushes beyond its predecessor and immerses players further into ultramarines gritty battles of hopelessness.
