PlayStation Meeting is done and dusted. Here's what Sony announced this afternoon.
The big gun: PlayStation 4 Pro, the long-rumored upgraded model of PlayStation 4, is coming very soon. November 10, 2016, worldwide, for $399. The Pro looks like a regular PS4, but larger. The CPU and RAM are identical to the original model, but the GPU is now twice as powerful: 4.20 teraflops to the original's 1.84 teraflops. It'll also pack a 1 TB hard drive, twice the size of the standard PS4's.
What benefits does this offer? While the games will be identical---you'll use the same game discs and downloads as the regular PS4---the in-game models can be more detailed if you have a Pro. And if you have a 4K TV, the games can output in 4K resolution. Pro will also support 4K streaming via Netflix and other services, although it won't support 4K Blu-ray movies.
Do you need to buy this new PS4? If you're going to buy a PS4 to play PlayStation VR games, this will give you an upgrade there as well. Sony did say it could improve the framerate of VR games, so that could be a big improvement. Otherwise, you can probably stick with your current PS4 for now unless you're planning on buying a 4K TV in the future.
The small(er) gun: If you'd just rather get a regular PS4, a new model will be on shelves September 15 for $299. It's smaller and more power-efficient, while maintaining the same functionality as the launch PS4.
