June 30 Will Mark the End of an Era for Resident Evil

AmiraGames2025-06-299700

On Monday, June 30, Resident Evil fans will no longer be able to play the multiplayer game Resident Evil Re:Verse, marking the end of an era for the franchise. Capcom has taken many swings at a multiplayer Resident Evil game, with mixed results. Resident Evil Re:Verse was one of the strangest attempts, as instead of releasing it as a standalone product, Capcom released it as part of Resident Evil Village.

Resident Evil Village was released in 2021 as a strictly single-player experience. Its multiplayer component, the aforementioned Re:Verse, wasn't available until late 2022. Essentially Resident Evil's take on the classic online multiplayer deathmatch mode, Re:Verse featured iconic characters and locations from the franchise. With it coming 1.5 years after Village's launch, there was never much interest in Re:Verse, and ultimately, Capcom made the decision to shutter the game.

Resident Evil Re:Verse will shut down on June 29 at 11:59pm PT/June 30 at 1:59am CT/June 30 at 2:59am ET. Once Resident Evil Re:Verse servers are shut down, the game will become completely inaccessible to Village owners and will effectively be lost to time. Resident Evil Re:Verse was not exactly a hit with fans. It earned negative reviews from those that did play it and most Village owners that got the game at launch probably didn't even know it existed. Regardless, Re:Verse shutting down marks the end of an era for Resident Evil, as it shows Capcom is now 100% done with Village and looking ahead to the next main series entry, Resident Evil Requiem.

When is Resident Evil Re:Verse Shutting Down?

Resident Evil Village's launch in 2021 was followed by Re:Verse in 2022, the Resident Evil 4 remake in 2023, and then nothing for 2024 or 2025. The Resident Evil series will make its triumphant comeback on February 27, 2026 with the launch of Resident Evil Requiem, which is effectively the follow-up to Village. Requiem will feature both first- and third-person view options and seemingly has a greater focus on horror than Village, though that remains to be seen.

No online multiplayer component has been announced for Resident Evil Requiem, and it's unlikely that one will materialize, considering how Re:Verse went. Still, that doesn't mean that there isn't a market for a multiplayer Resident Evil game. Resident Evil: Resistance servers are still online at the time of this writing, and it's safe to say that many fans would love to see the Resident Evil: Outbreak games make a comeback, especially with Requiem starring the daughter of Outbreak mainstay Alyssa Ashcroft.
