While the Formula One world is reeling after Christian Horner was suddenly dismissed from Red Bull Racing, what’s coming next might be equally shocking. The word on the street is that he’s heading to Scuderia Ferrari to whip the legendary team into shape.
Lewis Hamilton says Ferrari is finally listening to his complaints.
The news Wednesday that Horner, who shaped Red Bull into the racing powerhouse it is today, was being given the boot was shocking but not unexpected. Immediately, people started looking at Max Verstappen and his father Jos as the potential reason behind the move.
It’s no secret the Verstappens blame a lot of the dysfunction inside Red Bull Racing on Horner. Everyone can argue about whether that’s true or not, plus weigh in on if Max was the reason for the leadership change.
What’s even more shocking is the talk that Horner is using this opportunity to switch allegiances to Scuderia Ferrari. If that turns out to be true, Red Bull will rue its decision to show him the door. After all, with the resources the Italians have at their fingertips, under the direction of such a decisive leader, the sky might be the limit.
A few years ago we would’ve not given such a rumor any credence. But things have gotten a little crazy in F1 and with the new regulations in 2026 it’s about to get even wilder. That means teams are desperate for any edge they can gain.
That might push the Italians to do that which they wouldn’t have dreamt of doing not too long ago. As Newsweek points out, back in 2023 when the rumors about Horner going to Ferrari first started, the man had some rather harsh things to say about the team.
He rightly observed that its biggest dysfunction is that it’s a “national team” with “too many people at the top end” saying “everybody has an input and has a say.” In other words, as the old saying goes, Ferrari has too many captains and not enough sailors.
If Horner were to become team principal for Ferrari, he would likely want to clean house at the top end of the organization. That’s going to ruffle a lot of feathers. But with the noise Lewis Hamilton and Charles Leclerc have been making lately, that might help with affecting such sweeping changes.
It’s a long shot, but at this point almost nothing would surprise us in F1.
