Dragon Quest 1 & 2 HD-2D Remake Confirms No Upgrade Path for the Switch 2

ChanceGames2025-07-176530

Dragon Quest 1 and 2 HD-2D Remake has confirmed that there will be no upgrade option to go from the original Switch to the Switch 2 version of the game. The release date for Dragon Quest 1 and 2 HD-2D Remake is set for October 30, 2025.

The upcoming game is a collection of remakes of the first two games in the Dragon Quest series, which originally came out in 1986 and 1987, respectively. Not only will they have a full graphical overhaul, but they will also feature many new additions, including new cutscenes, new difficulty and customization options, and much more. The remakes are part of the effort to remake the original trilogy, with the Dragon Quest 3 HD-2D Remake also getting new story content.

A remake of Dragon Quest 7 might be in the works at Square Enix, whose latest Dragon Quest remake from 2024 continues to sell well.

In a FAQ posted on the Dragon Quest 1 and 2 HD-2D Remake official page, it was confirmed that if fans buy the game on the Switch, there will be no option to upgrade to the Switch 2 version of the game later. However, the post does clarify that owners of the Switch version can play it on the Switch 2, but it will not have the graphical upgrades that the newer system's version would have. Because the two versions of these remakes are being considered as separate games, players will not be able to use the same save between both versions, and download codes for the Switch 2 version will only work on that version of the game.

The Switch and Switch 2 Versions of Dragon Quest 1 & 2 HD-2D Remake Won't Share Save Data

While the two versions of Dragon Quest 1 and 2 HD-2D Remake are being treated as separate games, both will still recognize the player's save file for Dragon Quest 3 HD-2D Remake, encouraging playing the Dragon Quest remakes in chronological order. Regardless of which version of I and II Remakes fans have, if there is a save file for Dragon Quest 3 Remake, there will be a bonus dog suit and cat suit for Dragon Quest 1 and 2, respectively.

While this could be disappointing news for people hoping to upgrade their copy of Dragon Quest 1 and 2 HD-2D Remake in the future, the only difference between the two is in their graphics, due to the Switch 2's higher capabilities. On top of that, since the game doesn't release until October 30, players will have time to decide which version they want to buy. With how well Dragon Quest 3 HD-2D Remake sold, the remakes for the first two games will likely sell well, despite the backlash that this news may cause.
