During the Call of Duty League Championship 2025 Grand Finals, Treyarch associate design director Lawrence Metten compared Call of Duty: Black Ops 7 to Call of Duty: Black Ops 2 with some encouraging teases about what's to come. The story of Call of Duty: Black Ops 7 will follow up after the events of Black Ops 2, serving as a direct sequel.

Revealed during the June 8th Xbox Games Showcase, Call of Duty: Black Ops 7 marks the return of David Mason as the main character. In the year 2035, David Mason leads a Black Ops team against "a manipulative enemy who weaponizes fear above all else," with conflicts and psychological warfare on the rise. Raul Menendez, the antagonist of Call of Duty: Black Ops 2, was teased to make a return in some capacity, and Activision confirmed that Black Ops 7 will feature a co-op campaign, the franchise's tried-and-true multiplayer component, and round-based Zombies. These three pillars of the Call of Duty franchise were arguably at their peak back when Call of Duty: Black Ops 2 was released in 2012, with many fans still fondly reminiscing about the game. Fortunately, it appears that Treyarch is aware of how important Black Ops 2 is to the Black Ops series of games, according to Metten's comments.

When speaking briefly about Call of Duty: Black Ops 7, Metten compared the game to Black Ops 2, stating that "if you're a fan of Black Ops 2 back in the day, especially if you're a fan of Black Ops 2 competitive, you're gonna have a good time in Black Ops 7." Metten and the Treyarch developers were happy to see fans react to the Call of Duty: Black Ops 7 trailer, and the associate design director also noted that the developers were glad they were given a lot of creative freedom for Black Ops 7, since the game is "not tied to a previous era" of Call of Duty.

Metten notes that Call of Duty: Black Ops 7 players will "feel" the creative freedom of the development team while playing on the game's new maps, weapons, and gear in multiplayer. The director didn't comment further on the game, as the full reveal of Call of Duty: Black Ops 7 will take place sometime this summer. An exact date for that reveal hasn't been announced yet, however.
